Painting the exterior of your house is something that may only happen once every ten years but it can cause a lot of angst - not to mention the cost. It's a big decision and one that you, your family (and neighbours!) will have to live with.
Why not make the most of it and make an impact on your neighbourhood. Most people seem to be really adventurous on the inside when it comes to colour, so why not the outside too? Look beyond the swatch, beyond the street and beyond the neighbourhood.
In picking a colour the first thing to do is to look at the permanent features of the house like the roof, driveway and plants. Thanks to the technology that surrounds us you can experiment with colour combinations before you purchase the paint. If you're still not certain of a colour scheme or the colour you want is not on the charts, or you just need a bit of encouragement, there are colour consultants that can help you save time, eliminate frustration and achieve a colour solution that will give the desired impact.
If colour is not the way you want to go there are other ways of playing it safe yet also being a bit risqué. The first and most obvious choice is to paint your house a neutral colour and take the risks with the details, using a bright colour to accent window sills, doors and fences. Another alternative is to take the feature wall concept from the interior and apply it to the exterior. Again, you can play it safe with the bulk of the house and add impact by choosing one wall or section to paint a brighter colour.
By thinking outside the square and being adventurous in choosing colours you not only protecting your house from the elements, you can also make an impact within your street. And, who knows, you may have just increased the value of your property at the same time.
