Create great atmosphere in a room with clever lighting. Always make interesting lighting a priority when redesigning a room.
There are four different types of lighting:
Successful lighting relies on layering all four styles.
The main overhead light, a daylight substitute. A central light can create a harsh flat look, which needs to be offset by alternative light sources to create a softer effect.
Accent lights provide gentle supplementary illumination, usually lamps. They create soft pools of light, for an intimate cosy feel. Accent lighting can also be well placed LEDs or halogens, to showcase interesting details, architectural features and artwork.
Accent lights can also work in the floor e.g. shining up to highlight the texture of a stone wall.
A hidden light source, usually around one third the brightness of accent lights. It can be very subtle but adds that extra dimension to a room.
Possibly the most important – the light you work by, a direct light source designed specifically for one purpose. It is essentially to have a dimming switch on task lighting, to soften as required.
