Hatherley House is set in an old Victorian mansion, overlooking the city of Launceston. It has won a number of awards including the Royal Institute of Architects Award for Interior Design and was named one of the ’80 best new hotels in the world’. Flora de Kantzow bought Hatherley House in mid 2001 and took just four months to completely renovate the house. Although Flora does not have any formal training in design, she obviously has an extraordinary talent, illustrated in the stunning interior of Hatherley. Her imaginative melding of the old and new creates a look that is grand but comfortable, chic yet charming.
The moment you step into the spacious foyer, the design makes an immediate impression. Juxtaposed with the historic Georgian exterior is the chic ultra-modern décor. The walls in the house are stark white which shows off the artwork and treasures featured throughout all of the 9 designer rooms. These high-style suites with incredible bathrooms have a different theme in each setting. For example the Japanese suite features a Japanese-style bathroom with elliptical bath and timber flooring and features Japanese screens and paintings. Or the Ballroom Suite that has stunning French doors, high ceilings, original gilt mirror and its own private veranda overlooking the rose garden.
