A guide to waste-free gift wrapping

Save on money, time and waste this Christmas with some beautiful alternatives to gift-wrapping.

Christmas is expensive, time-consuming and often ends up with lots of waste from wrapping presents and food. So if you're wanting to lighten your load this year, why not opt for some beautiful waste-free alternatives?

There are many ways to put a personal touch on your gift wrapping using all-natural and eco-friendly compostable materials that can be found in your kitchen cupboard, op shop and even paper-based items and packaging from your recent Christmas gift purchases

Here are three simple ways you can create waste-free gift-wrapping at home:

Canvas Tote bags

You'll need: Canvas tote bag, jute twine (Check your garden shed!), wooden ornament.

Step one: Place your gift inside your canvas tote bag. This one works best for square shaped items. Fold your tote bag in half so the handles reach over the gift.

Step two: If the tote bag is a little bigger on the sides, fold tote bag sides in and wrap jute twine around to secure.

Step three: Hang a wooden ornament from the front handles. This becomes reusable too, as your gift recipient can hang the decoration on their Christmas tree next year!

Children's Book Gift Wrapping

You’ll need: Children’s book, Stanley Knife, Japanese Washi Tape, twine, bells (or alternative decoration), gift tag.

Step one: Pick your gift and choose a book with pages that will be able to wrap around your present. Using a Stanley Knife, carefully cut the pages from the book and tape together using the Washi tape.

Step two: Wrap up your gift in the book paper and seal with washi tape. Sealing the pages up on the sides with tape is easier and it also shows the beautiful illustrated book pages off more.

Step three: For extra festive decoration, wrap twine around your gift vertically and horizontally, tying a bow at the front.

Step four: Thread some ‘jingle bells’ or alternative decoration using the twine as well as a gift tag.

Reusable paper bag

You’ll need: Paper bag, Japanese Washi Tape.

Step one: Place your gifts into a paper bag and decorate the front using washi tape. Choose a selection of Washi tape with different pictures and patterns for a decorative look, and stick them down from the top of the paper bag. If your bag has a shop logo on it, this can be covered with washi tape as well.
