Rather than tucking Mark’s new orange fridge behind the kitchen cabinetry, I made it the focal point of his kitchen and, when you have a focal point as strong as that, you really don’t have to do – or spend - too much elsewhere because that punch of colour does all the work.
Once I’d designed the kitchen around the fridge, it became all about the other kitchen appliances and accessories that make life easier on an everyday basis.
Selecting all-black appliances of the one brand creates consistency in look and style, and Mark’s Smeg toaster and kettle absolutely do the kitchen and the fridge justice.
When using a fancy toaster it’s always good to have other fun, usable, accessories around that add character such as the timber toast holder, butter dish and chopping board we used in Mark’s kitchen.
I didn’t have a lot of bench space to play with at Mark’s so the kitchen sink’s drop-in chopping board and drainer provide much-needed flexibility. And, while the gunmetal tap tends to blend in against the visually striking backdrop of the bold splashback and fridge, you really notice its quality when you’re using it.
