Feature Wall Painting

The cheapest and easiest way to brighten up a room is with a can of paint, and it's something you can do in a weekend.

The room Shannon is tackling is a small bedroom that is open and visible in part from the living area of a small inner city warehouse apartment. The apartment is white and grey, with high white ceilings and columns, and steel grey carpets and tiles and a stainless steel kitchen. It is yearning for a bit of colour, and with the amount of natural light flooding in during the day, it can take quite easily an intense or dark colour.

Shannon has chosen to paint the feature wall a muted blue. Relaxing and meditative, blue is perfect for a bedroom and surrounded by white it looks crisp, fresh and bright. To complement the blue, we're bringing in a contrasting colour of red, with a new bedspread, rug and mohair throw. The result is truly striking.

Things to consider

  • Light rooms can take darker colours, whereas if you get little natural light, go for lighter, brighter colours.
  • Choose a wall that has a fireplace, bed or lounge in front of it for best effect.
  • The make over is a two stage process, firstly preparation and painting, and secondly, the styling touches.
  • Don't put too much junk on your bedside tables. Keep them clutter-free by choosing only a couple of pieces that mean something to you. Check out your local market for inspiration.
  • Most people go for a bright colour for a feature wall, but a muted colour can work just as well.
