DIY Heirloom

Too often family heirlooms and keepsakes are banished to the back of the closet, but if you mount your memories, you can look at them everyday.

All you need is a blank canvas, some black paint, a staple gun, and in this case, a lace table cloth.

Start by painting the canvas with black paint, any bold or deep colour will work just as well. When the paint is dry apply second coat for a smooth finish. Lay your lace out flat onto a table. Place your dry painted canvas face down on top, arranging the canvas so that the lace is in the position you want it to be. There is no need to keep it symmetrical; just find the most interesting portion of the lace pattern and make that your feature. Staple it onto the wooden frame at the back of the canvas to secure it in place.

Hang it on a wall or place on top of a cabinet and enjoy a creative piece that is nostalgic but not so nanna.

Lace (if not a family heirloom) can be purchased from any manchester store, Spotlight or Lincraft.

Paint, brushes and canvases are also available at Spotlight or Lincraft.

Staple guns can be bought from your local hardware store.
