Shannon Fricke meets the company founder of Designers Guild, Tricia Guild, who is known for her eclectic mastery of vivid and bright colours.
Designers Guild is one of the most influential and creative forces in the world of interior design. Established in 1970, they have a range of products including fabrics, wallpaper, paint, contemporary furniture, bed linen and accessories.
In the early 1970's, Guild stunned decorators with her fresh range of brightly-coloured products. Back then her look was chintz, fussy velvets and elaborate florals with the idea that decorating should be fun and bright.
"It constantly amazes me how a few subtle colour changes can create an entirely different mood. I am fascinated by its emotional impact. Why do berry reds make us feel sexy and intense, and pale blues and lavenders calm? How a single splash of orange can alter the entire mood of a room. If only we can understand colour better, we can create rooms that not only look right but feel right."
Things to consider:
- Don't be nervous about using colour. Colours are there to give you a thrill, to give you energy.
- When decorating be faithful to yourself, find your own colour sense.
- There are no 'real' rules to break.
- Before you begin decorating a room make up a collage board of all the things you like, e.g., postcards, fabrics swatches, magazine pictures. This will give you a strong indication as to your style and give you the inspiration to go from there.
