Cleaning Pen Marks on Upholstery

Shannon Lush shares a handy hint on how to remove pen marks on upholstery.

Most pens contain a spirit base, which evaporates leaving the pigment behind. By reapplying more of the same spirit, the pigment liquefies (or softens) and wipes away. Here's how to remove pen marks from upholstery.

1. After testing a small area of fabric, using the weakest to the most potent solvents in the following order: White Vinegar, Methylated Spirits, White Spirits, Acetone -
2. When you find the right solvent, carefully re-apply that solution to the entire stain using a cotton bud.
3. Wait 10 minutes for the spirit to do its job before giving it another good rub with more solvent on a pantyhose. Itt may take a little elbow grease to remove but eventually, the mark should disappear.
