Cleaning Dirty Carpet

Shannon Lush shares her favourite way to clean carpet naturally.

• Vacuum once a week, particularly if you suffer from allergies or asthma.
• Shannon also recommends sucking a just-used (still damp) tea bag into the vacuum cleaner bag before you start cleaning, to alleviate dust mites. The tea vapours will kill the mites in the vacuum bag.

I carpet clean for a living, and we would definitely recommend having your carpets steam cleaned at least once every 6 to 12 months.
I would also recommend using a vacuum cleaner with a turbo head to ensure that a lot more dirt is collected. Feel free to check out if you're trying to decide how to choose the best carpet cleaning company in your area.

To prevent an accidental spill becoming a dirt, cope with it directly away. Your carpet cleaner will be able to gather most of the fluid before it takes up in. If your carpet cleaner isn’t instantly at side, place some linens of kitchen move on top of the leak to dip up as much as possible.

My favourite part of carpet cleaning process is deodorizing it. For that aim I use essential oil from lavender or rose. I started working for a cleaning company ( and they showed me that trick which I use at home and tell friends. It is even suitable for daily home deodorising. I hope you like it too.

I have a small 2 metre square carpet with woolen or some kind of fibre that's about an inch long. Was wondering besides vacuuming weekly and steam cleaning it, (if i'm unable to rent a steam carpet cleaner + it's a small carpet) is there any other way to thoroughly clean it besides vacuuming?

Thanks Shanon for these amazing tips. I will definitely try putting tea bag into my vacuum cleaner bag next time. I have Custom Area Rugs at door entries and because of that it accumulates more dust than my regular carpets.

I would like to know how to get rid of a huge old coffee stain on a beige tile on the kitchen floor. I have tried using vinegar and bicard in a paste over night, i have tried bleach and have tried gumption, I have even gone so far as to rub a sard stick over the stain and leave over night. Any ideas please.... Andy

To clean that out of a carpet, you should first remove as much of the soiling as possible, you can then apply a detergent to the area and then use a steam cleaning machine to extract and flush out the problem. Once this is done you should have removed most of the staining, if not you may use a protein spotter which can be bought from your local carpet cleaning shop. Don't forget to use an antimicrobial chemical for your health. Any questions email us at
