The Art Deco period holds a special appeal for this collector.
What is it that Brendan Lawless likes about the Art Deco style? He says it's the straight lines meeting curves and the angles working together. It's not fussy or feminine or self-indulgent, and its modernity is applicable to design today. Some pieces are very masculine and above all, Brendan says it's fun.
A lot of people find it easier and better value to go to a department store and buy something in a box with no marks on it, according to Brendan. But he believes the many pieces he has collected are better made, have an interesting history, and cost a third of the price of a new item.
Most pieces Brendan has collected from auctions, although he has picked up many pieces for free. His most expensive acquisition was $400 for an IBM commercial clock, and the cheapest has been $5 for four light fittings.
Brendan's dream is to display all his beloved pieces in an Art Deco museum, but he fears his obsession may have driven his partner to leave him by then!
