Alternatives to Carpet in the Bedroom

Bedrooms can be challenging to furnish and decorate. While people often think that they are an easy room to design, bedrooms can become a breeding ground for dust mites and other allergens. Whether you are prone to allergies or not, keeping your bedroom clean and as free of dust and dirt as possible, goes a long way toward healthier living. One of the ways that you can eliminate allergy causing fibers is to find alternatives to carpet in the bedroom. The ideas below will help you get started.

Hardwood Floors

After carpeting, hardwood floors are the most obvious choice for bedroom floors. They offer long-lasting beauty and provide a formal and pulled-together look. Hardwood comes in a variety of shades and designs which makes it perfect for matching to any room’s decor. If you have a very formal bedroom set, a dark cherry floor would be ideal. If you have lightly-colored furniture, an oak or pine floor would be better. The cost of hardwood is greater than carpeting, but it will last much longer.

Like hardwood floors, laminates come in many different styles and colors. If you like the look of hardwood flooring, but it is out of your price range or you desire a more durable finish that is easier to maintain, a laminate floor is a better alternative. It is much less inexpensive and can even be installed by a savvy do-it-yourself homeowner. Many of today’s modern laminates offer the look and feel of real hardwood flooring without the expense.

Area Rugs

If you decide to install hardwood or laminate flooring, you may want to consider some area rugs as well. While wooden floors are attractive, they can also be cold on your feet. An area rug will protect the wooden or laminate surface while also providing you with a warm spot to place your feet when you get out of bed in the morning. Area rugs can be changed to fit your room’s seasonal decor, as well. This gives you great decorating flexibility and an opportunity to change your decor frequently.

Tile is another option for bedroom flooring. If you live in a warm, humid climate, tile can be the best option. Not only does it not warp under water or humidity, but it also provides a unique look that is perfect in a tropical home. You can always dress up the tile floor with an area rug if you so choose. With so many different tile styles, designs and colors available, there is no end to the type of floor pattern you could create.

Flooring is one of the most important choices that you will make when decorating your bedroom. Do not overlook the other options besides carpet, as they offer fun and stylish looks that may suit the needs of your room and your home better. As always, be sure that whatever flooring option you select gives you the maximum comfort and ease of care that you need. The flooring choices above will do just that.
