Were you a crafting before it was cool? Then you’ll remember honing your dexterity with these kitschy 90s crafts.
There were many things to like about the 90s. Facebook didn’t exist, cell phones were ridiculously impractical and if you wanted to get inspiration for your new project, you bought ‘Craft Beautiful’ from your local newsagent.
But just like fashion, craft trends left something be to be desired. So before they go through the hipster ironic revival, let’s remember why we’re happy to leave sponge art, teddy bears and sand jars in the past where they belong.
1. Decoupage Angels
Every blank love heart shaped box and trunk was a new opportunity to decoupage with Victorian angels and roses
All it took was a sponge, paint and some creative flair. There weren’t many houses that escaped the wildly popular sponging treatment!
3. Diamantes, fringing and badges
And while your mum was busy sponging the walls, you took that opportunity to bling your favourite denim jacket with diamantes, fringing and badges…
Then you BEGGED her to make sew scraps of fabric into scrunchies. And mum would happily oblige knowing that trying to get that elastic through that thin strip of fabric with a bobby pin would keep you quiet for hours.
5. Beaded safety pin bracelets
Crafting these required patience and sharp eyes, but it was so worth the effort because nothing said cool like beaded safety pin bracelets.
6. Friendship bracelets
You weren’t REAL friends if you hadn’t spent hours weaving friendship bracelets together
7. Sand Jars
And a trip to the beach wasn’t complete without taking home countless jars filled with sand. to make groovy sand art.
8. Cutesy Seashell Creatures
After you’d done that, you used a whole bottle of craft glue to transform those seashells into all kinds of cutesy creatures.
You did it until you got dizzy.
10. Pom Poms
And you'd happily spend hours making Pom Poms because they were just so darn practical!
11. Signature Bears
If you really cared, you’d make a bear and get everyone to sign it.
12. Pencil Toppers
And there was no way you were going back to school without a hairy pencil topper!
