5 Ways to Update Your Home for Under $50

Renovation? No thanks. You don’t have to overhaul your entire home to update it. All it takes is some small changes and cute ideas!

When we enter a home, we don’t just see how beautiful it is, we feel it and smell it too. Updating and rejuvenating your interiors are not so much about the big-ticket items that take up all the space. (Six-seater modular couch, I’m talking to you!)

Often, you can recharge your room with a few impactful statement pieces.

Here are five of our favourites for you to shop on a budget:

1. Lighting

Lighting is everything. Is it warm and welcoming? Is it bright and sunny? Moody and comforting? If you have bright overhead lights, chances are your interior space will look and feel sparse and uninviting. To create a comfortable ambience for yourself – and your guests – lower the light. Turn off ceiling lights and flick on a table or floor lamp.

2. Rugs

As soon as you step into a house, your eyes can be drawn to what lies underfoot. Not only will a rug add character to your room, it can make the world of difference if your floor has a few scuffs. While a new rug can be costly, there are cheaper options available for an instant fix. Rugs can also help divide and define ‘zones’ in an open-plan home, giving the illusion of more areas.

3. Art

Note: we’re not talking masterpieces here. But even cost-effective artworks can completely update a room. For a super budget-friendly option, enlarge some of your favourite landscape photographs, and spend the money on the framing, or shop online for cute prints.

4. Cushions

Layering seating with cushions can cover a multitude of sins! Even the oldest sofa can be updated with the right array of textural pillows thrown together. If you want to modernise a space, stick to bold, block colours or lineal stripes. If you want to have some fun, spots are a great option, but if you're after a ornate effect, then velvet is a perfect choice.

5. Candles

Scent is everything in a home. It could be the coldest of nights outside, but indoors, the aroma of warm, freshly baked cookies can infuse each and every corner! Or on a hot day, why not step inside to a fresh, zesty fusion of citrus? Candles have the capability to transform the feeling of a space all for a minimal price!
