As Danielle embarks on the big task of renovating her family lake house, we discover some surprising facts about the designer.
Many say to never work with family - but in Danielle's new property series, she proves it can be done, but not without some obstacles along the way. Tasked with a project that is alredy over budget and behind schedule, Danielle has the responsibility to finish the lake house within strict time frames and balance her family's list of high demands. But before we jump in, let us introduce you to some things you wouldn't otherwise know about Danielle:
She's a licensed contractor
Danielle started fixing up her own apartments soon after she had her first child as she had limited time and budget. She soon evolved from painting and simple carpentry to more and more complex projects. People noticed her talent, and began comissioning work from her - so she decided to get licensed and insured. She now boasts a revered career with multiple projects under her belt.
She's an eco-conscious designer
Whilst designing and building a project, Danielle works by the Passive House Standards: a low carbon footprint building technique that benefits the property, owners and environment all year round. Passive houses require minimal energy to achieve a comfortable temperature year round, which removes the need for air conditioning and other systems that are energy deficient.
She has multiple degrees
Danielle went to Queens University, where she met her now husband, and studied English Literature and Art History. After falling pregnant soon after she met Greg, she studied interior design at New York's prestigious Parsons School of Design. While in New York, she also forged a career working in revered art galleries in New York's Soho district.
She's married to Canadian actor, Greg Bryk
Danielle has been married to her husband, Greg for over 20 years, saying their vows in 1996. The two met at Queens University when they were both studying English literature. On the night Greg was cast to play Hamlet as his first play, he plucked up the courage to talk to Danielle at the campus pub and the rest is history! The actor has been in notable films and TV series such as The Handmaid's Tale, Bitten, The Incredible Hulk and Saw. The couple live together in Canada with their three children and two dogs.
Renovating is in her genes
While Danielle's skill-set is impressive, she's not the only one in the family who knows their way around a building site. At a young age, Danielle recalls her mother renovating their own family home from the ground up. And this wasn't just a lick of paint here and there - Danielle's mother redesigned and created new structural changes to the house, all the while raising four small kids.
