5 Christmas Decorating Tips

Christmas decorations don't have to break the bank. Set the mood in your home with these festive decorating tips and tricks!

Sean O’Brien, Horticultural Manager and the man behind The Christmas Lights Spectacular at Hunter Valley Gardensgives us his top 5 tips for decorating your home this Christmas

1. Make a family tradition

Get the whole family together every Christmas for a day of decorating. It’s a great way of keeping the kids entertained and spending some quality time together. Plus, the extra pair of hands will make lighter work, so you can relax and put your feet up!

2. Colour code

Whether you prefer the traditional Christmas colours of red and green, or something a little more modern, colour coding your decorations is a great way of creating warmth and class to your home and garden. From the table linen and centre pieces, to the wrapping paper and stockings, there are plenty of Christmas colours, styles and patterns out there to get your creative juices flowing.

3. DIY decorations

Save money and create your own decorations. Visit Pinterest for some fabulous concepts using old knickknacks from around the house. Placing colourful fruits such as red apples or limes in vases are a great way of creating vibrant table centres, as well as the use of nuts, and dried flowers and leaves from the garden to add that festive touch.

4. Save energy

Use energy saving lights to save on the electricity bill as well as doing your part for the planet. 95% of the Christmas lights we use at Hunter Valley Gardens are LED, which are excellent for their energy saving properties and intensity.

5. Edible tree decorations

Let the domestic goddess loose within you and get baking some fabulous Christmas cookies to hang on the tree! Use festive cutters, wrapping, and personalize them for each family member, or number them for a countdown to Christmas day.
