We show you how to use four classic pieces of furniture to create three totally-different looks for your living room.
Our sofa, armchair, coffee table and side cabinet are well made, timeless and their style will span decades. They might cost a little more but not only will these pieces last forever, most importantly, you will like them forever.
A large 4 seater in a lovely neutral colour, this sofa is strong and bold in its design and void of any decorative detail. Its size is great not only for lots of bums, but also for lying in the reclined position (a must for when you hit your mid-thirties). The fabric is good quality and will survive the wear and tear, and the colour will disguise any general darkening and stains that are unavoidable over the years.
This armchair has been chosen for its neutral colour (again!), and for the comfort factor. Because the sofa is so large, this armchair is enough to complement it and we can do without the usual "two- sofa arrangement". It opens up the space a bit more, and is a more flexible item of furniture as it can go just about anywhere. It's covered in a durable, long-lasting wool fabric, although remember that smaller pieces like this can always be recovered at a later stage for not too much hassle and/or cost.
This coffee table is in a warm oak that perfectly complements the neutral colour of the seating. Wood is perhaps the most flexible of all materials in its ability to be the foundation in almost every decorating style. It can support the "minimalist style" of barely there dressing with pieces made from contrasting materials such as steel, and can also complement the more rich sophisticated look of luscious fabrics and colours.
We've chosen a side cabinet in wood that matches the coffee table and brings all the pieces together. Placed up against a wall, it is perfect for resting large painted canvases on or displaying a collection of clear glass bottles. Of course, it is also very practical for hiding away all your video tapes and magazines and bits and pieces. A clean, classic style this cabinet will still look fabulous in 20 years time.
How do they work?
These pieces are very neutral and may not look like much on their own. But by adding rugs, cushions, vases, candles, lamps, paintings, bowls and picture frames, our four classic pieces are transformed into three entirely different looks:
- Bright and Funky
Using pieces that are bright in colour, and made out of materials ranging from hard plastic to soft and fluffy, we get a fun and funky style happening. You may feel more inclined to this kind of style in your younger years, and also at that time in your life when there is the pitter-patter of little feet running around.
- Slick and Modern
This is the look for that time in your life when you don't need any clutter around you. It's clean, simple, low maintenance - perfect for someone who doesn't spend that much time at home. You may be totally consumed by your work for a few years, or you may the social butterfly type with invitations for every night of the week. Either way it looks good without too much effort.
- Luxe and Comfy
Traditionally this kind of style comes in the later years in life, which for some people may be earlier than others. It's all about comfort and luxury, spending lots of time at home and creating a cosy haven to retreat to for hours on end.
This is more about socialising at home. When people come to you, the warmth and inviting feel of the furnishings immediately comforts them.
