13 Awesome Things You Can Do With Spray Paint

Think again before you throw out those old nick-nacks. You can give them a whole new lease of life with just a few blasts of spray paint!

Spray paint has to be one of the most versatile materials around. It’s easy and quick to use, fast drying, and there’s no brush strokes, plus there’s barely any clean up. It also lends its charms to almost anything – it can be used on wood, plastic, metal, fiberglass, tin, ceramics, mirror, glass, plaster, canvas, particle board - you name it, you can probably spray paint it!

It’s also a great way to upcycle old items – scour markets and op shops for items that can be turned into a chic addition to any home!

Before spray painting, always be sure to lay down plenty of paper and always work in a well ventilated area. In most cases, a double coat should provide results, but remember to keep each coat light, and let it totally dry before you apply the next.

To get you inspired, here are 13 awesome things to try with spray paint.

1. Upcycle your nick-nacks

Whether it’s a bottle or a tacky old ceramic nick-nack, spray painting will transform it. Think ceramic ornaments, plastic toys or photo frames.

If you are using it on a glossy surface, such as mirror or glass, it could be worthwhile priming first for a more even coverage.

4. Make impressive doily art

It only takes an hour to create beautiful art for your home. Simply spray paint a canvas or board your base colour, wait to dry, position your doilies and spray paint again. I found making the doilies slightly sticky with adhesive spray meant the pattern came out sharper.

6. Turn a fan into a rainbow

Because every kid (and big kid) needs a rainbow! Best of all, it’s super simple. Just spray paint each fan blade a primary colour, and watch it whirl into a rainbow when you turn it on! Alternatively, spray paint all one colour such as aqua or pink so it blends seamlessly with your existing decor.
