Making Faces

About the show

This new series follows children with life threatening conditions through the surgery which quite literally rebuilds their heads and faces and, ultimately, their lives. Behind the scenes in a craniofacial unit of a children’s hospital, the team of surgeons with a worldwide reputation for pioneering surgery provide a ‘one-stop-shop’, combining the skills of surgery with psychological and counselling support for severely disfigured children and their families. Each episode follows dramatic, high risk and life affirming cases: from the first operation on a child whose family might still be reeling from the shock of their severe abnormalities, to the hope and confidence in those families as they are helped and guided through surgery. The work of the craniofacial team this series follows is simply astonishing for the viewer. They transform the lives of children who pass through their doors. Children who go from being stared at in the street to not attracting a second glance are given the chance to be a normal child in a playground of children. Over a year of intense filming we witness the hopes and dreams of parents for their children become reinstalled.

I have watched 2 episodes and am completely in awe of the doctors who treat these kids. All of the little ones (and older patients featured in the program) are so brave. One particular child who really melted my heart was little Ollie. I hope the program continues to show how he and all the patients are progressing.
