Over 5 million people in Britain today can't read or write well enough to cope with modern life. From dealing with bills and letters, helping kids with homework, shopping, and finding
work. Their lack of skills blights nearly every aspect of their lives, including their self esteem. They keep the fact that they can't read a secret - sometimes even from their own kids. Adult illiteracy is a secret, shameful world.
Can’t Read Can’t Write meets nine illiterate adults who enrol for a six-month reading course which they hope will change their lives. Each one of them spent over ten years in the school
system - and yet they failed to learn the most basic skills. But this course is different. It's going to be taught by the inspirational and controversial teacher, Phil Beadle (Unteachables), for his most challenging teaching role to date. Can he teach a class of adults to read, some of whom can't sound out a single word?
