Australia's hottest DJ, Havana Brown, has established herself as one of the successful Australian exports of the decade.
Kristy Johnson sat down with the DJ turned singer to get the lowdown on her exercise routine, eating habits and how she keeps that killer bod!
How are you enjoying living in LA?
Well, I’ve been touring around the States for quite a while now, so it doesn’t feel like such a big change. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by people I admire in the industry. Pitbull is such a good friend. He’s a great guy, a real gentleman, very loyal and generous.
You look amazing. Are you quite strict with diet and exercise?
I do take good care in terms of what I eat. I try my very best when it comes to diet, however it’s hard when they have a lot of BBQ ribs over here (laughs). I do try and eat as clean as possible.
Do you have any particular tips when it comes to diet?
I would say look at labels and don’t eat anything that you don’t know of. Things like corn syrup and ingredients you have never heard of before.
What foods do you like to eat when you’re on the go?
I wake up really early at 5 o’clock in the morning, so I tend to have three breakfasts by the time lunch comes along! But I do start off with oatmeal and try to be good, and then maybe have toast with either jam or vegemite or something like that. Then for lunch I’ll opt for a salad or if I’m out I’ll order salmon with brown rice.
And how about exercise? Anything you’re particularly fond of at the moment?
Obviously with my video clips I love to dance, but at the moment I’m really into Pilates and Yoga. They’re amazing. But I would have to say eating well is my main thing when it comes to feeling and looking good.
What are some of your go-to brands or designers when it comes to fashion?
Well for day to day, I am a big online shopper! I like to go to stylegal.com. They’ve got some really cool stuff. I love Balmain, but that’s not really for everyday (laughs). I like how their clothes have a very strong and bold aesthetic. I’m not really a very feminine dresser. I’m a bit more masculine in my dress sense, but that’s the way I like it.
Are there any beauty products you couldn’t live without?
My makeup wipes are my lifesaver! Especially when I come home at around 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning after a gig. I’ll generally end up taking my makeup off in my bed (laughs). But as far as makeup, I love blush. Particularly Bobbi Brown. Their blush has a nice golden, rosy tone to it.
Do you feel any pressure as an artist to produce new material?
I don’t really feel pressure. I think when you start to feel pressure, nothing good can come from it. You get writer’s block and all of that. I prefer to let it flow. That’s really the best way to produce new music.
