Kids' Fantasy Rooms

Nursery themes and toddlers rooms are a big market at the moment in decorating, blogs and online shopping.

In fact statistics have said as the retail dollar is disappearing in the mainstream shopping shopping for kids has increased by up to 15-20% in the last couple of years. But what happens when the kids start growing up?

They get an opinion – that’s what. Parents don’t have the full say of what their kids want in how they dress, what they want to play and how their bedroom looks.

Now you might feel you are losing control but I think it is a time to have fun and let your kids start using their imagination. The all important ‘tween-agers’ years is a good time to start getting rid of the pastel walls, buntings and soft toys. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

BOYS

Boys like it loud! Create a music Den with their own set of ‘decks’ (real or fake) and put a row of hooks on the wall to hang an array of colourful head phones. Or really go for it and put in the mini drum kit with a floor full of felted bean bags for their audience to appreciate the private concert (more really to help muffle the noise!!!)

Active boys who love sport 24/7 will love a ‘field of dreams in their room. Turf the floor and mark it with either running tracks, goal lines or even a tennis court. You can even make a bedhead out of the sport equipment – a headboard of old tennis rackets would be a perfect place to rest their head as they think of sporting dreams.

GIRLS

For those discovering their fashion taste, take the clothes form outside the doors and turn the bedroom into a dressing room. Have open racks, an ottoman at the end of the bed in bright crazy fabric and put a big full picture frame on the wall and put inside it a number of hooks to hang your outfit for the next day. That way you can see their fashion taste develop into works of art.

Have a big slumber party every night. Have a round bed, put it in the centre of room, with their own mini kitchen for soft drinks, a popcorn machine and pull down movie screen to watch movies all night long. Throwing popcorn at the screen is optional.

You’re only a kid once – have fun!
