Stylish Garden Furniture

Designer Richard Unsworth's brief was to create a private and intimate space, hiding an ugly block of flats and an even uglier air-conditioning silencing room, which was dominating the area.

Richard's garden design used container planters with bamboo and nature reed cladding as a backdrop. A water feature and some interesting decking gave a very 'zen' feel.

Richard's Tips
  • Make sure the elements in the garden flow on from one another to create the whole story.

  • Choose plants that will cope with the conditions and do well. Consider the elements that will affect the garden such as wind, rain, intensity of heat, salt spray in the wind etc.

  • Simplicity is the key. Choose pots with good strong lines to show off the plant rather than the container.

Andrew O'Sullivan wanted to create his rooftop garden around the idea of a thatched hut in the middle of the city. He wanted an oasis outside the hurly burly of living in a big city. Andrew's creation takes rooftop gardens to the extreme. Included in the design was the hut and an outdoor bathroom, which included a toilet. He made the space seem larger by cladding the balustrade with mirrors, which doubled the view.
