Dr Hoey believes ‘Junk Thinking’ is one of the biggest barriers to establishing a healthy relationship with food, even more so than junk eating itself and has classified 4 types of ‘Junk Thinkers’ people can identify themselves with:
• The Dreamer - the person who sets unrealistic weight loss goals and turn to food for comfort when they don’t meet them
• The Justifier - the person who uses excuses to justify their unhealthy eating such as “I excised this morning so can eat more”
• The Labeller - the person who deprives themselves in a bid to lose weight until breaking point, where they then pig out on unhealthy food
• All or nothing thinker - the person who thinks even the slightest lapse means their whole diet is blown, leading to binges with the thought that “I can start my diet again tomorrow”.
In a market cluttered by celebrity ideals, unrealistic weight loss TV shows and quick-fix diet plans, Dr Hoey believes that people who have the above misguided thoughts about food is the fundamental reason why many Australians’ cannot successful control their weight.
