Episode 2: Paynesville Industrial

Monday, 24 June 9:30PM

Ten years ago retired Civil Engineer Bernie Ryan and his wife Ruth, packed up their three kids and moved to Paynesville, a charming seaside town in Victoria's popular Gippsland Lakes region. Bernie’s a tinkerer with a huge shed filled with crazy projects started in a flurry, but left unfinished. Needing a new house and unwilling to pay a builder, Bernie takes on the construction himself, armed with an eccentric, industrial design, a minimal budget and a cowboy attitude. Bernie wheels out his old crane and ropes in a bunch of retired mates to lend a hand. He’s built bridges and industrial constructions before, but this is Bernie’s first ever house - and his ‘she’ll be right’ attitude lands him in hot water when the building inspector turns up unannounced. Bernie tries to do as much as he can on the cheap, with supportive Ruth ever hopeful he’ll pull it off, so the family can move from their rough old shed into a real home. This is a makeshift, do-it-yourself construction that could easily end up a shambles. Will this be the one project Bernie manages to finish, or a blight on Paynesville’s picturesque skyline?

This was the most entertaining episode yet. Ive lost count how many times i laughed during this ahow. Had a constant smile on my face and it was great to see a down to earth type of family who the average bloke can relate to, nothing against millionaires but these two seemed more the average type of aussie. Also Peter is definately the best host for this show, hope to meet you one day when I start building in Metung.

good on you Bernie and Ruth, i have always had a healthy obsession for inovative design, and 20 years ago i had an accident which means i am in a wheelchair, however i have never stopped dreaming of what could be, and for many years i have had an idea of how i would want my dream home to be, and i was surprised to see how close your vision was to my own, except that excellent window idea, i am currently moving to the goldcoast and really hope to have the opportunity to build something very close to what you have achieved, if i can achieve 90% i will be satisfied and i might get SOME too. good luck and wonderful vision .

Peter: Is Bernie your favourite person I the two series!? Certainly seems it! Love this episode of The Castle meets Grand Design, 'Bernie. He's a thinker,' said his wife!

I thought the house is very very nice and the park and ocean was a wonderful view. But the houses around it ,what can I say,the new house dosn!t fit. It looks odd.

I love the show and get great inspiration from the amazing designs and people on each episode. However I was horrified by the lack of safety measures shown on the recent Paynesville episode. To have people stepping under suspended loads with no regard for the potential safety consequences was appalling. While I appreciate that Bernie was doing the work himself this does not excuse the fact that a serious accident could have occurred from any of a number of high risk tasks that were undertaken. Safety is everyone's responsibility and I would hope that Lifestyle would be sending a better message.
