Over the years, Nick and Anna McKimm have almost made a hobby of renovating, selling and moving on. But with three young children, they’re ready to lay down permanent roots and build their dream home. A sleek, modernist, 60’s inspired family residence on a large, half acre block in Melbourne’s bayside suburb, Brighton. Nick heads up a successful building company and knows a lot about quality period reproductions - particularly classical architectural styles - and Anna has a flair for beautiful fit-outs. But as they’re about to learn, mid-century building is very different to other architectural styles and comes with its own challenges.
This house is incredible! The overall design and authenticity of 60s Art Deco design and methods that the house has been based on are all well researched and put into practice. On top of this the clever incorporation of modern design and new technologies into the final product makes the house a state of the art 60s Art Deco replica! The end result is impeccable. I love it!
Sensational! Congratulations to you both.
I was really disappointed with the outdoor area, looked like a shopping centre car park and not a multi million dollar house. Really weird, needed some greenery or plants or wood or something non-concrete and non-white.
i loved it, i feel as though i am living in it
I like this house, as I living in a 60s contemporary house in Canberra too; I know it is hard to find these style of design in the old suburb in Melbourne, Heidi is one of iron but far away from the city. Congrate NIck and Anna to achieve their dream home .
I absolutely LOVED it - I can't stop looking at it - it takes my breath away. So nice to see some one doing something original. They deserve to be very proud of themselves.
Fantastic home!! When will GDA put the supplier list up on the website as it page doesn't exist when you click on it? Or can you tell me where the metal rimmed floor mirror is from? (master bedroom) Many thanks
mirror can be purchased from Meizai in Church st Richmond 2200 x 800 x 40 - about $600
LOVE THIS HOUSE..... WE ARE BUILDING AND I TOTALLY APPRECIATE THE WORKMANSHIP AND YOUR HARDWORK AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS.... LOVE IT GREAT JOB AND WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO BRING UP YOUR FAMILY
Congratulations Nick and Anna, I really enjoyed the first episode. I thought it was an exceptional house which had a lot of light and a well thought out plan! Great design. I loved that the position of the pool is wrapped around by the house and you are able to enjoy each room due to the large windows and sliding doors, not to mention the roof that opens! I thought it was one of the best designs I have seen in a while and fantastic for entertaining. With the tennis court and pool lovely for your young family. Well done and I'm sure episode 1 will be hard to beat!
Other than the strong horizontals, I don't see much about this house that is the innovative style of the mid-century. I was disappointed by the unimaginative white and neutrals used throughout inside and out. Personally I couldn't stand the glare. The bright colours and vibrant contrasts showcased by Peter earlier in the show are missing. Also the inside-outside flow of mid century architecture generally had a much more naturalistic outside. How did the local council allow this block of land to be covered in hard landscaping with not a tree in sight? For six million dollars plus, they could have injected much more excitement, imagination and energy into the property.
I too completely agree that this house lacked the true style of Mid Century Modern. I was particularly disappointed with their idea of a sunken lounge and the lounge they chose for the room. The neutral colours do not represent a Mid Century inspired colour scheme. Also they should have astroturfed the roof like they originally planned. The roof looked unfinished.
I too am mystified as to how the council approval for so much hard landscaping went through- is there any grass beyond the tennis court? The property is certainly impressive, however probably a bit too magazine perfect and cold for my liking. I can't imagine feeling cosy in that house.
Love the Mid Century design, especially the cantilever roof lines, internal courtyard and that pool area, but if they were really sympathetic to Mid Century design they would have added more warm timbers, COLOUR and furnished it with original or at least Matt Blatt repro stuff. I mean FFS that aluminum and mesh outdoor setting is just such cheap-looking, contempory rubbish. Whilst the sunken lounge is so ace and that circular lounge a talking point, the coloring of white and Aubergine (carpet and cushions) is something Shawna Blaze-Vaughan might do to gloss up a bogan weatherboard that won't sell. Such a warm design aesthetic tarnished by a cold, clinical decor. For mine the best and most faithful Mid Mod room is the bathroom. Love the handles on the vanity doors.
I love this series. I get amazed at some of the designs, and the people behhind the desigins.
I would love a home like that..they have taken to have a lot of light ,saving themselves on electricity. A great design
Well done Nick and Anna. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I admire your bravery to go out of the box, to build something different. I loved it. Congrats. Lisa Morley. Grand Designs episode 1.
Wow! That is a gorgeous design. It's gonna blow me away for sure. It'd be nice if I had $6mil lying about too! :)
I call it mental design and have actually met some of the owners. Some are brilliant some are just ridiculous and silly. It is the number one show on lifestyle for sure.
This is an awesome show
Cant wait for the new series :)
