Always room for one more!
NSW
Hi Lifestyle team, My name is Carolyn Stedman. My husband and I have lived in our delightful 'grand design' for the last 43 years. It is a dearly loved family home. It has a most interesting background- it was imported from Salzburg, in Austria in the mid 1950's. It came on a ship called the 'Brita-Booth'. It is a 'log cabin' style home and it arrive 'flat packed'.
We have made a few changes over the years - it was built as a 2 bedroom home, but we were lucky enough to have six wonderful children, so there was a need to extend! We now have six bedrooms but a very outdated kitchen and are planning to remove a bathroom and to redo and extend the kitchen area. All of our children are married and we now have 19 grandchildren, so things are tight when the family comes for lunch- all 33 of us! Most of the time we also have a baby in foster care living with us, so that makes 34!
We would love to participate in your competition.
Regards,
Carolyn Stedman

Our house is being built in a demolition control area of Brisbane so we have had the challenge of keeping with the "timber and tin" look while also trying to keep our design contemporary and we love what we have come up with. Understair Galley Kitchen
VIC
A unusual approach to modernising the rear plan of a 19th century Victorian terrace makes this Grand Design special. A 2 storey extension to the restored front section, form the basis for the proposed works. Seeking a solution to limited space has placed the kitchen understair, allowing for an open plan diner/kitchen/living. Miele appliances are to be installed in the galley kitchen, floor to ceiling units. Planning approved, work commencing 2012.

New VS Old Kitchen
NSW
I designed it myself!
The kitchen has been transformed from terrible to wonderful and is now a beautiful, practical, light filled space.
The layout works well in relation to the next room(the dining room & lounge room) and the addition of french doors to the outside, extends the kitchen space.
What was once a dark dank kitchen, has now been transformed into a beautiful room, that brings the outside world in & is also great for entertaining.
(If I won the Miele prize I would replace the already rusting!! Ilve products)

Miracle on Murdering Point
QLD
We rescued our our precious home from an abandoned local sugar mill that closed down, and moved her down the beach. We wanted to preserve her history and heritage as a cane-cutters cottage some eighties years old so we built in underneath and gave her a grand makeover including a new roof to keep the silky oak safe, polishing her timber floors and adding built-in's to suit our large family. Our old girl has since survived two category five cyclones (Larry and Yasi)! Yes, we've had a fair amount of external damage both times, with awnings and guttering and some doors blown away, not to mention the neighbors 10 foot tinny landing in our swimming pool. She is a Grand Design because she is a survivor, resilient beauty, a classic Queenslander!

"Engineered to Last" - Kitchen by Sandra

I designed it entirely myself from scratch. It was my dream kitchen, I had everything in it I ever wanted. I found a brilliant kitchen cabinet maker and I loved my kitchen everyday, but now I have moved house and I have to start again with a kitchen renovation but this time don't have the funds so would love some help so I can build my Kitchen Delight Mark II.!

Country Gothic
NSW
Everyhing! I love the exposed timber beams and mix of earthy granite, warm yellow tones and terracotta floors. The functional design with multi-prep areas would flow well with our four children in mind. The gorgeous carved cabinets, wrought iron light fixtures and stone sink balance the sunniness with a serious, solid old world feel that makes a timeless statement. It conjures images of our daughters clustered round, some on benches, some on the floor, a copper pot boils on the cook top, whilst I chop the vegetables and tell them tales of days gone by......

Outdoor overhaul
WA
In sunny WA the outdoor lifestyle is just as important as the indoors, so with that in mind we set about creating outside that the whole family could enjoy. Our little makeover involved a pool, spa, bar to watch foxtel from, two new pergolas, new poored limestone and a brushwood screen to hide the boat and shed. Lots of blood sweat and tears went into this but it was all worth it. Now we sit outside and when we aren't entertaining we dream about it being the inside's turn next and this prize would go a long way to helping renovate our tiny and impractical kitchen into something my Italian wife would be proud to cook in.

Reducing those electricity bills
NSW
When we built our passive solar house we installed a gravity feed hot water tank enabling us to use solar panels and a stove with a wet back so we don't use any electricity on the hot water. As well as this we have PV cells on the roof so when the bill arrives it's always a healthy credit.

RENOVATE OR DETONATE
VIC
This house had been so badly built and was in such a bad state of repair, the previous owners had lived in it and used it like a their own private tip, friends said we were mad to choose to renovate it, but we could see the potential. It took 2 yrs part time to complete while we lived there and in that time we also fell pregnant and had our first child together. The house had to be pulled back to a shell basically and then rebuilt, but the end result was beautiful and well worth the blood sweat and tears.

Ballyduggan
VIC
Our house is an ecletic melting pot. An edwardian weatherboard frontage with a twist of high set windows, colourbond back and sides. Reclaimed electricity poles that give it a beachy feeling. High square set ceilings and cathedral ones too. All this and more - way before its time, built 9 years ago the house has evolved from a paddock of trees to the loving home it is today. Owner builders we toiled every weekend to get it up and running. Eventually getting to move in - sheer bliss - but not finished. After 9 long years of scrimping and saving we have finally finished our dream house inside and out - only project left is to get our lawns right! This has been a labour of love, now beautifully finished we are ready to start again - with magical dreams of what we can achieve, ever evolving due to different episodes of Grand Designs!!! This house has been the heart of our family, ever changing as the needs of our children changed - the only thing constant was its' style and sophistication. Ballyduggan will stand for many years and bring endless pleasure to many in the future.

"A slice of retro heaven"
VIC
Paying homage to the past, with all the mod cons of today, our grand design will breathe new life into a modernist classic. We've sourced tiles from the 60's, we're tiling our benchtops (everyone'll be doing it in a year or two!) and we've saved and restored the ceramic knobs. Not a glass splashback or beige wall in sight... Just our little slice of retro heaven.

Club Susan
VIC
My mother passed away in 2002 and with the money she left me, I put in a pool for our (then young'ish) children to enjoy and encourage them to stay close. It has taken us years to design the garden surrounding our (Nana's) pool and create an area that would see many parties, friends popping in for a swim, our kids inviting friends for a spa (and maybe a wine) and so many family BBQ's, birthdays & Christmas's. The backyard has become a symbol of family representing love, happiness & togetherness. The children (now adults) call the pool area 'Club Susan' as they think it looks like a resort :))We love our grand design!! (thanks mum xx)

Backyard Bali Retreat

Our area is special because my husband built, painted & paved it entirely himself with some assistance from me. I did the styling & art deco, inspired by Thai & Bali themes. Holmes Build
VIC
Our project of building a dream home started off with a luxurious architectural drawing of a ‘modern French provincial style with three levels plus a rooftop’. As an owner builder, my partner and I encounter a string of frustration, stress and on-going problems. Eighteen months have gone by; we’ve changed and adjusted most of the designs from the original architectural plan to suit our lifestyle of a young family with two children. We’ve come half way to complete our Grand Design; to this point my favourite part is the private rooftop garden over-looking the view of Melbourne city.

Wamberal Work In Progress
NSW
We have been planning and designing our Grand Design for 2 years! This is our first home and we bought a 1960 beachcomber on the East Coast of NSW. We were inspired by Grand Designs to take on this project and have finally commenced the build early this month (May 2012) in preparation for our surprise 3rd addition to the family due in late June 2012. Our Grand Design is so special because we have put all our time, effort, design know how, finances and dreams into this home for ourselves and our children. This home embodies our future as this is our forever home. Our home would be even more special if we could include the fabulous Miele products, which are our first choice but due to budget constraints are becoming out of reach. We love the german engineered design and would be ecstatic if we could include this Miele Kitchen Package in our Grand Design!

A combination of Feng shui and ideas picked up from countries around Asia have been put together to create the perfect home. Its not totally finished but so far its looking amazing

Currumbin Phoenix
QLD
It is representative of a colourful bird rising from the ashes.
The original dwelling burned down tragically in 2011 and I want to create a new home rebuilding the bones of the old dwelling giving it a new future.
I want to incorporate burned orange as a predominant colour into the facade to acknowledge the fire and to remember the previous owners.
The property is surrounded by native vegetation and wildlife including the brightly coloured world famous native rainbow lorikeets which feed daily.
The planned treehouse has an industrial warehouse feel but still a zen like atmosphere incorporating the existing concrete withnthe addition of exposed structural steel creating a three level atrium plus a hawks nest style roof decking. It is accessed by an external spiral staircase to view the ocean and treetops.
The property will feature a large void area over three levels, polished timber and concrete, an egg shaped jacuzzi, feature staircase, five deckings, plunge pool and a contemporary gas open fireplace.
it is my intention to embrace the setting of the huge eucalypts and palms while creating my own uniqueness. A combination of art meeting architecture and a beautiful environment to house myself, my partner, our new baby due in September and my ever faithful staffy.

Solar Home
QLD
"SUSTAINABILITY" Through out our 4 level home we have installed 2 X Stand Alone 12 volt system's consisting of 62 led downlights seperately wired with a 12volt power accesory for charging personal devices phones ipod's etc This is all controled by 2 solar controler's and only 2oo watts of Panel's combined
When there is a black out we still have lights because it's not grid connected
I first tested tested the idea in a caravan trip around Australia but used an inverter and found this to be less energy efficient so went 12 volt only
We also have state of the art solar hot water combined gives us elect bills approx $280 per quarter while using ducted air conditioning periodically

Risky Reno

We are following the Grand Design way of "taking a risk" to live our dream. We are rent to buy owners of a house in the country. We hope to update our old kitchen from the 70s to now. The only thing is we do not own the house yet. Its a risk but all Grand Designs are a risk. Knocking out the far wall and removing the cupboards above the bench top will open up a great new open plan living area. Should we do it?? Watch Grand Designs to find out! This episode could be filmed in just one week if we won the Miele Kitchen Package!! Please help us by voting now!

A sandy story
NSW
Our reno has transformed into a story that has Grand Designs built all over it! What was predicted to be a 4 month project has turned into a sandy nightmare. 2 months in and we are still trying to find a solution to constructing a solid foundation on 10 metres of very soft sand, unbeknownst to us prior to pulling up the floors!
There are advantages of living close to the beach but this is not one of them, particulary when you are one half of a semi, and any disruption of the foundation could have crucial consequences. So while I dream of my beautiful kitchen to be, complete with a 4 metre long corian island bench in 'snow white', custom-made joinery, my long desired stainless steel 900mm stand-alone cooker,'hopeful' accompanying Miele appliances and a 10 metre long skylight filling the room with gorgeous natural light,I gaze longingly at this photo, the proposed location of my kitchen, and cannot wait to submit you with a photo of the finished kitchen design in the very near future.

Hillcrest
VIC
My grand design is special as it is made from a lot of recycled materials including stone sourced from Mt Hotham, timber doors and windows made from timber off the property, posts out of shed at Cabramurra and materials sourced at auctions. It has a cellar and an internal glass courtyard. The house was designed with certain materials and items I already had in mind. It also special because of the amazing tradesman who worked on the house and all the stories which go with the building of the house and the sourcing of materials. We are still working on the inside.

From drap to FAB!
SA
My temp kitchen. We have ripped the old 1960s kitchen out to make way for my grad new kitchen. Have knocked out the wall and put a sliding door inn and replace the old back door with a window with a L shape kitchen and island easy to use and plentey of storage. Makes the space larger the new door lets more light in the house and its special to me cause with a bad back and shoulders means I can use the kitchen and enjoy it as its our design and to fit us. Taller benchtops so not leaning over and all soft close draws no cupboards except the wall units even the pantry has draws to make easy acess with shelves ontop.
Every space has been used to our advantage cant wait to have it finished to bake and invite friends around.

South Coast Dream
VIC
Our house has taken over 2 years to get the plans and look how we want. Building is to commence next month, starting with a 3 metre excavation to allow for a special feature -full width pillarless worshop under the house. Another special feature is the expansive decks which will give us uninterrupted views of the ocean, Barwon River and Geelong. The home is 6 star rated complete with lift and all double glazed windows. Cant wait to have our sea change and move into what will be an amazing home. (ps. Miele products would complete my dream home)

tank
WA
For 3 years I have been living in a coolroom attached to a truck on my
humble farm. I could have hired contractors to build a house in the
country or constructed a kit home but I knew in my heart that I would
never be content. Approximately 4 years ago I purchased a farm in
Kojonup. What attracted me to the farm was the location and serenity.
Unfortunately the farm did not have a house or shower, what it did
have was two empty water tanks which had been left idle for sometime.
When I considered building a home, I knew I had to make my decision
quick, during the time it took me to make my decision I installed a
shower to the side of the water tank. Upon installing the shower I
let myself consider the possibility of making my home from a tank.
Now that I have provided the background, I will address the question
at hand. If you google the definition of grand the following words
come to hand… impressive and ambitious. I believe that my design is
impressive, ambitious and special. It is creative, different and
certainly special. I took a fixture that was no longer being used on
the farm and transformed it into something more. So much time,
planning and work went into the tank and all of the labour, thought
and creativity came from me. I could go on but I know that there are
plenty of submissions for you to read, but what I can say is my grand
design is special.

This house means so much to us, as it has been approved each step of the way by our two beautiful girls (ages 5, and 2). We have let them help choose everything, from doors, to bathroom accessories.
We were scheduled to move in end of march 2012, however due to finances we are still about 1 month away from moving in.

The White House
NSW
Our house was a wreck, abandoned for many years, with a parade of renters who couldn't care less. The garden was SO overgrown, we were told we'd never grow grass there was such a canopy of bad foliage. It has taken us 2 years to get it to where it is. Strangers walk to our door to tell us how amazing it now looks. We have added value in the monetary sense but we LOVE our house. My husband and I work full-time and my husband is studying and we have 3 children under 10. Our house has taken all of our time (& money) but it has been worth it. We only need to do our bathrooms and KITCHEN. We have an old Miele dishwasher and over that still looks amazing but we'd love to produce a new kitchen with new Miele products and this would speed up our progress by at least a year!!!!! Miele is such a trusted, well reknowned and brilliant product.

We moved to our new acreage property 4 weeks ago. The old kitchen was a salmon pink colour with a shabby old linen cupboard as part of the design. Collendina
VIC
We purchased our 'Grand Design' in June 2010 after spending many hours being inspired by the Lifestyle Channels over 6 months. We were living in a small school house and had moved 11 times in our married life. The shows made us realise that a home, where our children and one day our grandchildren could return to and make memories was missing in our lives. The house was built by the Walker Tile family in Geelong and was nominated for house of the year in 1995 because of the quality and authenticity of the build. We had always admired it and the amazing story of our purchase proved to us that it was destined for the Carroll family. Whilst the decor and appliances are very dated, we absolutely love the spaces and are looking forward to renovating when we can. Two of our children live away and when they come home for a visit they seem to 'hang around' and say "this feels like home".

70's style design file
NSW
We bought this amazing house for our young family 18 months ago. Designed by award winning architect Bruce Rickard in 1970, we want to restore it to its original colours (not green!) and bring back to life the original and contemporary, 70's style timber joinery, light fittings, bathrooms and kitchens - all currently in original condition. Rickard was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and there are so many architectural elements that we want to enhance - alongside new sustainable design features. The kitchen is the heart of this styling home, and we will put the Miele kitchen into a revived eco-friendly design.

Recycled
QLD
After the 2011 floods we lost part of the machinery shed in which we live... so with a big dose of courage and a tiny bit of money, we are building a small house on the site, using recycled materials given to us by friends and neighbours. We have bought a lot of items that were destined for the scrap heap, such as brick seconds. Loving every bit of the experience:) We are also living in the mess with two teenagers....

Mud Brick Madness
QLD
It has been a dream of ours for 30 years to build a house from the wood and mud from our own property (although not all the wood is). My husband is nearly single-handedly building our house with a little help from myself and our daughters, it is our rustic paradise and has been done with very little funding. Neither of us have building experience, just a lot of reading and determination. Everybody said we couldn't do it, but we are.

Mustard nightmare!

Where else can you find an original 1980'a kitchen in such GREAT condition that you can't justify replacing it for anything other than aesthetic reasons?? This kitchen is beyond special and I MUST win - it's the only chance I have of getting a new one!!!!

Our flooring is going down RIGHT NOW (seriously only took this picture a minute ago). First the flooring, then we start some painting, the landscaper is booked in for next month, then more to come. Obviously we need some new Miele kichen wear to go with the new flooring :)

3 Sisters House
NSW
Naturally bushfire resistant timber composites, the louvres that open to a massive glass roof, the cantilevered deck, the separate-yet linked living quarters, the setting-on a cliff in Katoomba, the vertical slit windows of the japanese bath house/bathroom, but all of these things would be nothing without the spectacular Australian bush environment of rocks and gums, cliffs and escarpment views.
