We live in Mt Gambier SA and are looking for a tree that will provide shade during the summer and drop leaves to provide light during the winter. We would like something that will only grow to 3 meters but still be a main feature in our front garden. The area in which it is going to go has full sun in the afternoon and is currently covered by river rocks that will continue to stay. The area size is 4m x 3m in size.

There are very few trees that will stay under three meters but my favorite two small trees that have great autumn colour are the Chinese tallow wood Sapium sebiferum or the Chinese pistachio Pistacia chinensis.
